| What is a travel song? |
Some travel songs just have that certain feeling. Even though they may not be directly about travel, they create the mood. It's true that many of the songs listed are often about love or some other non-travel theme, but you can't pass up a song like 'Better be home soon' by Crowded House because it is about breaking up and the hope of getting back together. Like many songs, 'Better be home soon' still captures the mood of travelling - particualrly if you have been away from home for a while.
Most of the travel songs listed will either relate to a specific destination or a feeling or mood when your on the road. Once again, we know that 'London Calling' is not about a desire to go drinking in London pubs while taking in the local sites (it's actually a song about the Cold War). However the idea of being 'called' by a desired travel destination is an idea we like, so its on the list.
Springsteen As a general rule, we haven't included songs about War, even if they make mention of a specific country. Some war-related songs do make an appearance but we feel that most don't quite have the right travel feel. An example of something we decided to include is Born In The USA. This song is over 20 years old but still captures a sentiment that can be still be seen today when visiting the USA.
Another key thing we've try to include is that the songs should be relatively well known. They don't have to be chart toppers, but there should be some chance that people outside your hometown will know it too. We are sure that there are many great songs we've missed because they were only popular in one country or a small part of the world. And finally: this site is not a contest of who has better musical taste. We know some stuff listed is cheesy, old and possibly a little embarrassing. We even poke a little fun at some songs - but that's okay. We are only trying to give you some ideas. Like travel itself, there will be some things you hate and others you will like, and experiences vary for different people. Happy travels.
